COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Mountain America Center in Idaho Falls opened in November 2022 and has hosted over 200 events while drawing more than half a million visitors—big names like Brad Paisley and 'Weird Al' Yankovic are set to perform. General Manager Erik Hudson said the center will keep offering quality events—ranging from sports to ice shows—to make each experience special for the community.  KXPI

CRIME NEWS

  • A 39-year-old Idaho Falls man was arrested on felony aggravated sexual battery charges after a woman said he put meth into her during a meeting arranged on a social media app (he was booked with a $15,000 bond and is scheduled for a preliminary hearing Wednesday).  East Idaho News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Governor Brad Little signed a law on Wednesday requiring students to be proficient in reading and writing cursive by the end of 5th grade—Idaho schools must follow the new guidelines when the school year beginning in 2025 to 2026 starts.  KIVI-TV
  • Elevate Academy is a new public charter school at 1873 North Walton Avenue that offers hands-on training in eight trades for middle and high school students. The school, serving grades 6-10 with 340 students, plans to add a junior class this fall and arranges weekly field trips to local businesses.  East Idaho News
  • Bonneville Joint School District 93 has chosen Tyler Mills, a former assistant principal, as the new principal at Hillcrest High School to replace Ty Salsbery who is moving to Mountain Valley Elementary to spend more time with his family—District 93 also named Cody Jackson, the current ThunderRidge principal with nearly two decades of construction experience, as its new Director of Planning and Personnel.  KXPI

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Yesterday, the city of Idaho Falls began repairing water lines on the 2,000 block of Woodruff Avenue near 25th Street — water will be shut off for some properties and traffic delays are expected until the work is completed in the next couple of days.  KPVI
  • Idaho Governor Brad Little signed a law that makes a firing squad the primary method of execution. The new law applies to all executions after July 1, 2026 and requires the Department of Correction to certify the method within five days of a death warrant.  KIVI-TV
  • Idaho House members voted 42 to 24 on Monday to pass House Bill No. 364, which creates a Government Efficiency Legislative Task Force to reduce costs and cut delays. The task force will have nine members and will start appointing its group by July 1, 2025, operating until November 30, 2029.  KIVI-TV
  • On Thursday, Gov. Brad Little signed House Bill 231 into law to boost the grocery tax credit from $120 to $155 and refund sales tax on some food items. The law takes effect retroactively on Jan. 1, 2025 — it also removes some credit provisions and meets federal and state privacy rules.  KIVI-TV
