Good morning, Idaho Falls. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 20th of March.

CRIME NEWS

  • A 69-year-old man from Bonneville County—Donnie Lee Winn—was arrested on aggravated battery charges after he allegedly tried to strangle a woman during an early morning altercation in a camper near the 2700 N. block of 5th W., the sheriff’s office said.  KXPI

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Highland High School hosted a groundbreaking ceremony earlier today to start rebuilding parts of the school after an electrical fire in 2023; construction will be done in two phases and is expected to finish by 2027—parents, students and staff should avoid the construction area.  KPVI

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Both chambers of the Idaho Legislature passed a bill that creates a media shield law to protect journalists by keeping their confidential sources secret. The measure now goes to Gov. Brad Little, who has five days (excluding Sundays) to decide whether to sign it into law, let it become law without his signature, or veto it.  KPVI
  • Idaho lawmakers passed Senate Bill 1023 to ban rules that require vaccines or any medical treatments—this will stop local groups and businesses from asking for proof of medical interventions—and now await Gov. Little's signature; if signed, the law will take effect on July 1.   KIVI-TV
  • The Idaho House passed HB 389 to improve fire suppression on federal lands by giving the governor the power to direct state resources to fight wildfires. The bill reclassifies uncontrolled fires as public nuisances—making those who start them liable for costs and allowing the state controller to use general fund money with cost recovery via civil actions.  KIVI-TV
  • Idaho Falls Police Department is holding a written and physical fitness test on April 19 at the Police Complex for candidates aiming to join as police officers + emergency communications officers. Those who pass will continue with background checks, interviews and evaluations, while candidates must meet basic requirements including being 21 years old, a high school graduate or GED holder, a U.S. citizen and possessing a driver's license, with an alternate test scheduled for July 26.  KXPI
  • The Idaho Transportation Department warned Idahoans on March 19 about fraudulent text messages that claim recipients owe toll fees — Idaho does not have toll roads and the department does not issue fines. Residents are advised not to click links or provide personal information if they receive such messages.  KPVI
  • The Idaho House passed House Bill 83 on March 11 with Senate amendments to curb illegal entry and require convicted individuals to return to their country, and Gov. Brad Little will decide whether to sign it into law or veto it. The bill imposes felony penalties for noncompliance and includes an immunity clause for law enforcement acting in good faith—if signed it will take effect immediately due to an emergency clause.  KIVI-TV
  • Idaho Falls now has a new Peace Officer Standards and Training Academy at the College of Eastern Idaho to train police officers and sheriff deputies with local, hands-on scenarios. The Detention Academy will start on April 28 and the Patrol Academy will begin in July—providing a closer training option that reduces travel time and lowers costs for agencies across eastern Idaho.  East Idaho News
