GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • AAA Idaho expects a record 45 million Americans to travel this Memorial Day weekend—an increase of one million over last year. Spokesperson Matthew Conde advises drivers to leave early since the roads will be busy between 3 and 7 p.m.—Governor Brad Little has declared May 25-31 as Safe Driver Week to promote road safety.  KXPI
  • Secretary Brooke L. Rollins signed waivers on Friday to limit SNAP benefits in Indiana and Iowa—prohibiting purchases such as soft drinks, candy, and sweetened beverages. The restrictions will take effect January 1 and could boost Idaho’s waiver request, which was submitted along with early applications from Indiana and Arkansas.  KXPI
  • Idaho State Police will prepare for the 100 Deadliest days on the road from Memorial Day to Labor Day after more than 82 people lost their lives on Idaho roads last year (a figure that underscores the need for tighter safety measures). Troopers will increase patrols statewide (focusing on impaired drivers, speeders, and aggressive driving) as they work with local law enforcement to curb risky behavior during the busy summer travel period.  KPVI
  • Bonneville County Sheriff’s Deputies are taking part in a statewide seat belt enforcement effort to keep drivers safe as Memorial Day nears and the 100 deadliest days of summer begin—urging drivers to buckle up, obey traffic rules, and avoid distractions. Idaho has seen 60 fatal crashes this year—many of which may have been prevented if drivers had worn their seat belts.  KPVI
  • Kerry Hammon has been named Executive Director of Idaho Falls Downtown Development effective June 1 and will take over after Bryan Chaffin departs at the end of May. Hammon is a lifelong resident with extensive experience in public information and community events (she joined the organization as a part-time operations manager earlier this year) and is set to enhance local downtown projects.  KXPI
