- ➤ The Bonneville County Sheriffs Office honored retired Sheriff Byron R. Stommel, who died Monday at his home outside Idaho Falls and was known as the longest-serving sheriff after starting his law enforcement career in 1993 and retiring in 2007. The office expressed its sympathy to his family (recognizing him as a mentor and friend to his team). KXPI

- ➤ A hunter shot and killed a grizzly bear in self-defense on Oct. 18 near Island Park when the animal charged him in thick timber in the North Antelope Flats area of the Caribou-Targhee National Forest, and Idaho Fish & Game confirmed the action was justified after a full investigation. KIVI-TV
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ AAA said gas prices in Idaho dropped slowly, with the average at $3.44—two cents lower than last week—and the national price near $3.04 while Idaho ranked seventh for expensive fuel. AAA said more savings will come if crude oil prices and fuel demand fall amid fall weather. KPVI
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Idaho Falls Regional Airport is collecting donations to help TSA employees working without pay during the federal shutdown. Donations such as food, diapers & household supplies and gift cards may be dropped off at the administration office Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., while cash, checks, and prepaid cards will not be accepted.
